In 1978, Monique Wittig concludes her lecture on The Straight Mind by stating «Lesbians are not women». The shockwave produced by this quote doesn’t come to an end, and still today, impacts the feminist theory and beyond. This rupture is confirmed by the normative and heterosexual culture, that Monique Wittig was about to call The Straight Mind, translated in French with a ten-year delay in 2001 at Balland Editions.
Monique Wittig (1935, Dannemarie, Haut-Rhin - 2003, Tucson, Arizona) is the author of novels, such as L’Opoponax, theatrical plays and essays. She was a founder of the Women Liberation’s Movement. Her ideas are still crucial in debates that cross feminist and queer theories. She has been a teacher for the Women’s Studies department at the University of Arizona, Tucson.
This collective reading is part of Festival Libres Regards.
